Five Celebrity Gamers Who Got Really Good

Five Celebrity

Gambling and celebrity culture have long gone hand in hand. If you think about the rise of Las Vegas, it won’t take you long before you get to Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. And from the glamorous Las Vegas casinos to the exclusive haunts of Mayfair or the underground games of LA, you’ll never be far from a Hollywood A-lister or a superstar athlete.

Of course, that’s no real surprise. Online gambling has become hugely popular in recent years, with millions of players worldwide enjoying a spin of the reels or, more recently, playing free play and connecting with others on the latest social casino sites. So, it makes sense that there are celebrities doing exactly the same, too.

In fact, some have gotten pretty good, too!

Whether it be mastering the art of poker strategy, reading opponents under pressure, or being a bit of a whizz on the slots, knowing their RNG from RTP at a social casino, there are several stars that could even compete with seasoned pros. We run down five celebrity gamblers who are genuinely impressive in their own right…

Ben Affleck

Perhaps the most famous and well-respected within gambling circles is Ben Affleck. He’s a highly accomplished blackjack and poker player and has developed a real reputation to complement the many awards that he’s earned for the likes of Argo, Good Will Hunting and more.

He’s even studied advanced strategy, according to reports, and in 2014 was famously asked to stop playing at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, with staff believing him to be card counting!

He’s really refined his skills, recognising that concentration, discipline, being able to work out probabilities in quick time, and staying calm under pressure are the secrets to success and developing a true understanding of the game.

That’s led him to win several tournaments, including the California State Poker Championship back in 2004, while he was part of an infamous poker game run by Molly Bloom.

Matt Damon

A friend of Affleck and Good Will Hunting co-star and writer Matt Damon has also been known to be a bit of a star when it comes to the poker table. That’s reflected in some of his movies – he’s of course robbed casinos in the Ocean’s movies, while he actually started playing in preparation for the iconic film Rounders.

It’s widely regarded as one of the greatest poker movies ever made, and Damon developed a real lasting appreciation of the strategic side of the game. Both he and co-star Ed Norton spent time studying professional players and practising, and it paid off, with Damon taking part in several major tournaments.

Tobey Maguire

Maguire, too, was a player who became deeply involved in the high-stakes poker scene that flourished in the 2000s and was known to play in Bloom’s games. He’s one of the biggest players in the celebrity scene, and rumour has it that his poker skills are so good he’s competed against experienced professionals – and held his own!

It’s believed he had a real dedication to improving and studied poker seriously so he would have the patience to succeed in longer sessions. Many poker pros have stated that he approaches the game differently than your more casual celebrity players, with a real competitive edge and a discipline and calculation that only the most skilled operators have.

Jennifer Tilly

Jennifer Tilly occupies a unique place on this list because she successfully transitioned from celebrity player to highly respected professional competitor.

Known initially for her acting career and distinctive voice, Tilly gradually built an impressive reputation within professional poker circles. In 2005, she achieved a milestone many amateur players can only dream of by winning a World Series of Poker bracelet in the Ladies’ No-Limit Texas Hold’em event.

Winning a WSOP bracelet is one of poker’s highest achievements and requires considerably more than luck. Tournament poker involves managing chips carefully, understanding probabilities, adapting to opponents and maintaining composure over many hours of competition.

Tilly continued proving her credentials by performing consistently well in major tournaments and earning substantial career winnings. Unlike some high-profile celebrities who receive attention purely because of their fame, Tilly gained genuine respect from professional competitors because of her technical ability and tactical awareness.

Her success also helped challenge outdated stereotypes surrounding poker, showing that women could compete successfully at elite levels in what had traditionally been a male-dominated environment.

Neymar

Finally, modern football superstar Neymar has become one of the most visible celebrity gamblers of recent years, particularly within the poker world. While some athletes merely endorse gambling brands commercially, Neymar developed a genuine passion for competitive poker.

The Brazilian forward regularly streams online poker sessions, participates in major live tournaments and trains alongside respected professionals. His enthusiasm for the game is clearly authentic rather than promotional.

What makes Neymar stand out is the seriousness with which he approaches improvement. Poker requires many of the same qualities elite athletes develop in sport: concentration, emotional resilience and decision-making under pressure. Neymar appears to have embraced those similarities.

Although he remains far from the level of the world’s best professionals, experienced players have acknowledged his growing understanding of tournament strategy and situational awareness. He has achieved respectable finishes in several competitive events and continues to improve through study and experience.
