Identity Guard Review for 2026: Budget Plans, Coverage Trade-Offs, and 3 Alternative Identity Theft Protection Tools
Identity Guard sells one of the lowest-priced plans from a major identity protection brand. Its Value tier costs $8.99 a month and covers dark web and breach alerts. Credit monitoring starts one tier up on the Total plan at $19.99 a month.
Identity monitoring prices vary widely across the market. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau notes that these services range from a few dollars a month to more than $15. Lower prices often mean fewer features, so what a plan covers matters as much as what it costs.
Choosing the right coverage matters most for older adults. The FBI’s IC3 2025 report records an average loss of $38,500 per victim aged 60 and older. That is nearly double the all-ages average.
With that in mind, we compared Identity Guard’s plans with three alternatives. Coveron ranks first for overall value and family coverage. OmniWatch follows for high insurance limits per dollar, and Zander offers the lowest-cost recovery help.
Who Owns Identity Guard
Identity Guard was first run by Intersections Inc. and is now part of Aura.
An iSubscribed-led joint venture, Aura’s predecessor, bought Intersections Inc. The buyers announced the deal’s completion on January 11, 2019, according to an SEC filing.
Older reviews still credit IBM Watson for Identity Guard’s breach alerts. The current Identity Guard site no longer describes that technology. We treat those references as historical.
Value, Total, Ultra: What Each Tier Gives Up
| Plan | Individual monthly | First-year annual (standard offer) | Annual renewal | Credit features |
| Value | $8.99 | $90 | $107.88 | None |
| Total | $19.99 | $200.04 | $239.88 | 3 bureaus, credit lock, annual report |
| Ultra | $29.99 | $300 | $359.88 | 3 bureaus, credit lock, annual report |
Every annual plan renews at a higher price. The Value plan rises from $90 to $107.88 in year two.
Promotional offers on the plans page can cut first-year prices further. A Save 50% offer lists the Value plan at $53.88 for year one. The same renewal rates still apply.
Family versions cost $14.99, $29.99 and $39.99 a month. The 60-day money-back guarantee applies only to annual plans. Identity Guard offers no free trial.
Coverage Trade-Offs
No credit monitoring on Value
The Value plan watches the dark web and sends breach alerts. It does not monitor your credit files. So a new loan opened in your name would not trigger a Value-plan credit alert.
$1 million insurance on Value and Total
Value and Total list $1 million in identity theft insurance. Ultra raises that to up to $5 million and adds white-glove fraud remediation. American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida underwrites this coverage.
Kids get SSN monitoring only
Children on family plans get online account and Social Security number monitoring. They do not get credit monitoring. Adults on the same plan get the full feature set for their tier.
No VPN or antivirus
Identity Guard includes Safe Browsing and a password manager. It does not include a VPN or antivirus.
Readers who already pay for a security suite lose little here. Everyone else needs a separate one.
Ratings and customer feedback
Security.org rates the service 9.4/10 in a July 2026 update. Customer reviews are more mixed. Some members mention long phone hold times and confusion over credit report updates. One reviewer added this in a September 2026 update to a June review:
“Waited on hold for 30 minutes… I spoke with a rep and was told they don’t automatically update the credit reports they report on their site.” (Lynne B, 1 star, Trustpilot, updated September 2026)
Identity Guard holds a 3.1/5 TrustScore on Trustpilot. That score comes from 4,480 reviews.
Top Identity Guard Alternatives
We rank three services that compete with Identity Guard on price, insurance limits or recovery help. Coveron and Zander cost less than Value’s standard first-year price. OmniWatch costs less than Total and carries higher insurance limits.
| Service | Featured plan price | Credit monitoring (featured plan) | Best for |
| Coveron (formerly NordProtect) | Starts at $6.99/mo (Identity Theft Protection, 1-year plan) | 1 bureau | Overall value and family coverage |
| OmniWatch | $179.88/yr (Elite) | 3 bureaus | High insurance limits per dollar |
| Zander Identity Theft Protection | $75/yr | None | Lowest-cost recovery help |

1. Coveron (formerly NordProtect) – Best for Overall Value and Family Coverage
Coveron (formerly NordProtect) offers credit monitoring at the entry level. Its Identity Theft Protection plan starts at $6.99 a month on a 1-year plan. That is well below Identity Guard’s Total plan at any of its listed annual prices.
Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN, builds and runs the service. This plan includes 1-bureau credit monitoring plus financial account and short-term loan monitoring. It also offers 24/7 dark web monitoring of SSNs, email addresses and card numbers.
The Full Protection plan starts at $10.99 a month on a 1-year plan. It adds 3-bureau monitoring with a VantageScore 3.0. It also adds a VPN and antivirus.
Coveron’s insurance goes beyond the $1 million on Identity Guard’s Value and Total plans. HSB Specialty Insurance Company backs up to $2,000,000 for identity theft recovery. It also covers $100,000 for cyber extortion, $100,000 for online fraud and $10,000 for cyberattacks. Coverage limits depend on the plan you choose. The deductible runs from $100 to $250, depending on the plan.
Coveron’s recovery support goes beyond reimbursement. A claim through HSB brings in a dedicated U.S.-based case manager. This person handles most of the restoration work for you or any adult member on a shared plan. Monitoring, alerts, recovery support and insurance all sit in one plan.
Coveron’s scam protection names fake stores, unlawful money transfers and elderly fraud among the scams it covers. It also covers romance scams, marketplace fraud and QR code scams. That focus suits buyers over 60, who face higher average losses.
Cybernews names Coveron its top pick for budget-friendly identity theft protection. A U.S. reviewer, Dora Norman, called it “a clear and straightforward service” in a September 2025 Trustpilot review. The service carried the NordProtect name at that time.
Full Family Protection covers five adults and all children under 18. It starts at $28.99 a month on a 1-year plan.
Coveron’s identity and cyber benefits are available across the U.S., including U.S. territories and D.C., except for New York residents. Each plan carries a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Recommended for: Budget-conscious individuals and families who want credit monitoring and recovery support without paying for Identity Guard’s Total tier.
2. OmniWatch – Best for High Insurance Limits per Dollar
OmniWatch offers up to $4 million in identity theft insurance on its Elite plan. Elite costs $179.88 a year, about $14.99 a month billed annually. It also includes 3-bureau monitoring, $50,000 each in scam and ransomware coverage, and home title monitoring.
OmniWatch bundles a VPN, antivirus and AI-powered scam detection. Annual plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee. OmniWatch also won a 2025 Gold Stevie Award.
Customers rate OmniWatch 4.3/5 across 1,110 Trustpilot reviews. Independent expert coverage is still limited. Insurance figures also vary across its own pages, so we suggest confirming limits before buying.
Recommended for: Buyers who want the largest insurance limits for a mid-range monthly price.
3. Zander Identity Theft Protection – Best for Lowest-Cost Recovery Help
Zander’s Essential plan costs $75 a year for one adult. It includes unlimited restoration from a U.S.-based team of certified specialists, available 24/7. Individual plans include up to $1 million in reimbursement benefits.
The company describes its plans as not an insurance product. Each plan is an administrative services contract with restoration and reimbursement benefits.
Credit monitoring is not listed on any plan. The Elite tier adds Experian CreditLock, a VPN and antivirus for $130 a year. Security.org rates it 8.1/10.
Elite also widens the monitoring for a modest step up in price. It adds home title, bank and retirement account, new account and account takeover monitoring. It also includes a password manager and protects up to 20 devices.
Recommended for: Buyers who mainly want inexpensive, unlimited recovery help.
What Under $200 a Year Buys
Four plans in this review cost less than $200 for the first year. Each one spends that budget on a different kind of protection:
- Zander Essential ($75): Unlimited restoration help and up to $1 million in reimbursement benefits. It includes no credit monitoring.
- Coveron Identity Theft Protection (starts at $83.88 for the first year): 1-bureau credit monitoring, financial account monitoring and up to $2,000,000 in recovery coverage.
- Identity Guard Value ($90): Dark web and breach alerts, plus $1 million in insurance. It includes no credit monitoring.
- OmniWatch Elite ($179.88): 3-bureau credit monitoring and up to $4 million in identity theft insurance.
Price alone says little. We suggest choosing based on what you want most: alerts, credit monitoring, high insurance limits or hands-on recovery help.
The Bottom Line
Identity Guard’s Value plan works for buyers who want breach alerts at a low price and nothing more. Credit monitoring requires the Total plan. Total costs $200.04 in year one and $239.88 at renewal.
We rank Coveron as the better overall value for budget buyers and families. It includes credit monitoring, a dedicated recovery case manager and $2,000,000 in coverage. It costs less than Identity Guard’s Total tier.
We recommend OmniWatch to insurance maximizers. Readers who only want cheap recovery help will find it at Zander.
