Perfect Homebodies’ Winter

Emily Kwak

During spring, summer, and autumn, I always anticipate for winter to arrive. I dare say that winter is the best season , because it has snow, a warm and cozy mood, and Christmas. Though Fall is also somewhat cold, it is not as freezing as winter, and it does not have snow. Summer has its own charm, but it’s is too hot for homebodies to stay inside; even if you stay inside with the air conditioner on, your room might be too dry! Since winter is the best season, no matter where and when, I hope everyone can look forwards to enjoying winter!

Snow softens on your hand like a cloud of cotton candy melting on the tip of your tongue, it's the taste of winter. The freezing wind brush agaisnt your cheek as you open the window, and a crisp winter day waves good morning. A cup of steaming hot chocolate stream sits beside you, with marshmallow bathing in the sweet and creamy pool. Covering your whole body with thick, fluffy blankets, you start to watch your favorite movie. Then you start to absorb into movie in a cozy mood. This is how one of the homebodies, myself, would like to spend free time in winter. Unlike innate homebodies, People who are not homebodies need to spend winter at home for now, indeed, due to COVID-19. Since winter is on her way, I would like to recommend some ideas for the ‘temporary homebodies.‘

Who are Homebodies?

A homebody refers to a person who likes to stay at home. However, a homebody does not always stay at home, nor a homebody equals to an introvert. Therefore, any people who likes to voluntarily stay at home as often as they can be a homebody!

Recommendation List

For the temporary homebodies, or forced homebodies, here is a recommendation list of what to do during winter.

Watch a Movie

As described in the first paragraph, watching movies like Home Alone with hot chocolate, tea, or your favorite drink or snack is one the best things you can enjoy. Movies are relatively accessible through Netflix, Disney +, Apple TV+, and etc. Personally, last Chirstmas, I watched three movies in a row with my friends with great food. Since movies are usually more than 1 hour, I think watching a movie is one of the best ways the kill time.

Prepare Winter Holidays

During winter, there are many holidays worldwide: Hanukkah, Christmas, Chinese New Year, St. Lucia Day... Plan your own celebration for these holidays. You can have an online meeting with friends, families, and loved ones even if you can't see them in person. During the pandemic, many already get used to utilizing technology to maintain precious relationships in their lives. I also had to make a ceremonial bow through video, a traditional way to show respect for elders, for Korean New Year's Day.

Read

Instead of movie, in the winter, you can also read, such as, Harry Potter series! If you cannot reach libraries near you, read e-book using Kindle, Website of local library, Books Google, Apple Book Store, etc. You will be able to buy or borrow books. Through reading books, many earn indirect experience, or even pure joy. Any other ways are fine, reading books can be a great way to just relax.

Be Crafty

Above all, you can also be productive and craft for winter. You can:

  • Crochet

  • Knit

  • Build a miniature

  • Make Christmas toys

  • Decorate a Christmas tree

  • Make candle or lantern

  • Make a bookmark

  • Make DIY Snow Ball

Instead of simply killing time, crafting can be a productive way to spend the time as you can produce something and have fun.

Cook

Cooking has been a beloved hobby for many people. Experience various cuisines from all over the world. Moreover, you can of course prepare Christmas meal. Since people need to spend more time at home, try cooking different types of food and challenge yourself. Even if you cannot cook because you’re in quarantine, you can master recipes and basic knowledge about food before you start cooking.

Games

At home, playing games is another popular option for homebodies; play: Board Games, Video Games, Online Games, Dice Games, Role-playing Games, etc. You can even play boardgames online these days, which you might do with friends, families, or anyway you would like to do. Also, online or video games might also help you self-isolating. In the game, you can still socialize with people.
